Human beings have diverse ways of learning. Some assimilate the knowledge received auditory, visually or through certain senses. However, most education systems ignore individual diversity that exists between learners such as the learning style, background knowledge, learning ability as well as the learning goals. Education system offers standardized teaching materials to learners that tend to be beneficial to those that learning style and background knowledge fit with the teaching materials. It is, therefore, important to use resources that support the learning process that suits characteristics of most students. In the context of the availability of electronic media as well as information technology evolution, the plan of matching the e-media with learning and teaching styles appropriately have been explored lately. Learning is evident in a change of behavior and also in cognitive processes. Thus, effective learning occurs by use of teaching strategies effectively. This paper will focus on adaptation of technology, active learning strategies as well as demographics of today’s learners.
Adaption of Technology
Today, students have grown within a pervasive technology world that incorporates omnipresent internet, digital cameras as well as mobile phones. These students are described as Net –generation since they absorb information quickly in videos, images, text as well as from multiple sources simultaneously. They operate at twitch speed expecting feedback and responses instantly. The technology affects everything they buy as well as do and the experience in technology has enabled the Net generation to master tasks that are complex and make rapid decisions. However, the net generation lacks understanding on the ways to find, evaluate, use as well as present information. Therefore, they need to be taught strong critical thinking skills and information literacy. To keep up with the net generation to bring about attainment of desired objectives, teachers must possess skills and understanding of diverse ideas, concepts and theories. A digital split exists based on device vintage, online skills, autonomy, connectivity and interest in the use of technology. Video have become a massive force in changing the scenario of education today. Many schools are leveraging video in many ways to maximize learning outcomes through live video, on-demand as well as streaming.
Online course work and YouTube assist students in many ways especially in the modern breed of tech-driven students. This is because the traditional method of teaching struggles to engage learners with a deep attachment to personal devices and smart phones. It is, therefore, crucial to shift the trend towards educating the students in the language they best understand. YouTube videos offer learning experiences and provide rich insights on diverse topics. Moreover, it can support classroom learning by visually recreating what was taught. The best thing about online learning is that students can learn at their pace through streaming videos since they are accessed easily and can be viewed as many times as one would wish. However, there are challenges in using YouTube and videos sites since teachers cannot prevent students from exposure to inappropriate content. Educators, therefore, should be aware of risks and take the initiative to educate themselves on how to chose technology so that can control the content their students view.
Active learning strategies
Active learning refers to instruction model that focus the learning responsibility to learners. In this model students must reads, discuss, write as well as engage in problem-solving Moreover, it relates to three domains in learning known as skills knowledge and attitudes thus it is thought as goals of the learning process. Active learning engages student in doing things and thinking about the things they are doing. Alternatives to Active learning may include learning through play, activity based learning, technology-based learning, group work as well as project method. Active participation of students is a crucial aspect since active learning is not just listening. Students must perform duties; think about the duties and the purpose of doing them so that they can enhance their thinking capabilities. Active learning as a strategy in learning has promoted levels of achievement and content mastery. However, some teachers and students find it difficult to get used to the new learning technique. Active learning strategies aim at transforming students from passive listeners to participants who are actively involved. Moreover, the strategy assists students to understand the subject through gathering, inquiring and analyzing data that help in solving cognitive problems of high order.
Active learning strategies require appropriate environment for learning through the implementation of the right strategy. Learning environment has several characteristics that include alignment with the constructivist strategies and evolution from traditional philosophies. Moreover, it also involves promoting learning theta is research based through investigation as well as authentic scholar content. The environment should also encourage students to develop leadership skills through self-developing activities. Another characteristic of the environment includes creating collaborative learning atmosphere through interdisciplinary learning as well as generating activities that are high profile to enhance the better learning experience. Integration of knowledge to incur structure of knowledge among student should also be part of the environment. Finally, he environment should have task based performance enhancement that give student practical sense of subject matter that was learned in class.
Small group learning is an example of active learning since it allows students to express themselves in a classroom set up. Students are likely to participate in a discussion of a small group than in a lecture classroom since they are more comfortable with their peers and from a sheer number perspective, dividing students into a group will help them speak out. The teacher can use different ways to implement small discussion in the class, for instance, through assignment, competition or making a game out of it. This because small group discussion is beneficial to students than a large group when it comes to the expression of thoughts participation, applying issues, understanding issues and overall knowledge status. A small group is coordinated with the principle of constructivism that is cognitive, evolving, meta-cognitive as well as effective in nature. In active learning, the child goes through a process of knowledge construction, recording, and absorption. It is worth noting that the process of knowledge construction does not depend on prior knowledge of the learner. This is because the learner is aware of cognition process and can regulate and control themselves.
The usage of social media across the levels provides a good percentage of members undertaking a number of key activities. About 80 % of students are social media readers monthly while 36 % are participants. However, the significance difference is seen when the results are sorted by age and gender .today’s learners are users of technologies and the web and want to see collaborative and social approaches that they can underpin in all life aspect. For instance when playing, learning or working. Although some schools implement e-learning, they are being promoted by professional who highly engage the web tools as well their ethos. This is because they have become immersed in the use of the tools and the success of any institution depends on how well they keep up with the new learner demographic change.
Fostering an atmosphere of civility in colleges and organization is a challenge. To be civil means to be respectful, polite or descent, with the use of technology in schools incivility is on the rise. Incivility is an action or speech that is disrespectful from abuse, insulting remarks and violent behavior. Some of the uncivil behavior can affect the academic environment causing the learning to be terminated. This academic incivility has resulted from exposure o violence, poor preparation changing student’s demographics and inadequate preparation are, therefore, important to consider the changing demographics of students so as to curb the situations. Education plays an important role in assisting students in developing a civl society while higher education plays a crucial role in helping students to develop a sense of social and civic responsibility.
Social, economic status is the measure of influence that the environment has on schools and individuals. The term is associated with social class. Financial stability is the foundation of the classification. The concept of social class is continuous throughout the people lifetime and from one generation to another. This social class has economic differences as the chief influence. The factors that are considered when establishing social, economic class are education and income. The social, economic status can affect child cognitive development. For instance, students from families with low social economic status are likely to face such as attention problems, language delays or learning disabilities. A cultural background is basically shaped at family, societal or institutional levels. At institutional levels, teachers should build bridges between what student want to learn and what they know so as to prevent cultural differences. Effective teachers embrace the cultural background of the students for easier learning. Due to demographic changes teachers experiences do not mirror the experiences of the students in any way.
In conclusion Net generation use technology in their day to day live but they lack understanding on the ways to find, evaluate, use as well as present information. There teachers need to teach them strong critical skills and information literacy. Active learning should be embraced by encouraging students to take part in small group discussions. In active learning, the child goes through a process of knowledge construction, recording, and absorption thus chances of engaging in incivility are minimal.
